This project and the future

Postby Technocrat » Mon Jan 25, 2010 11:54 am

When I started this project the goal was to make a CMS from scratch that worked seamlessly with phpBB v3. Honestly creating a CMS from scratch is a lofty goal for anyone. I knew this before even starting. My plan was to start the ground work and get some people on board to help move the project forward and help bring to life the vision I had. Well those plans fell apart.

From the start we had a ton of people offer to help and to work on the project. I would always ask anyone that wanted to help if they were sure they could/would help. Everyone of those people promised to work on the project and seemed generally authentic in that promise. But in the end I can count on one hand the number of people that even committed one line of code to the project. Hell most of those people didn't even contribute one post or idea. I find this to be personally insulting on many levels, and from a project standpoint devastating. This project cannot continue with the small workforce we currently have.

I can also not continue to put the time into the project that I did. Sadly it's just not there anymore for me.

On top of that the core team has made the decision to change course a bit. Unfortunately this course change means an overhaul in much of the current system. In the end it will be much better for the system. But its a lot of work.

I love this project and think that we have done a number of amazing things. I feel that this project has the potential to be a major player in the CMS world. However, with my time limitations and the lack of help this has created a situation where in my honest opinion this project will never see a BETA much less a RC or a Final. I really wish this wasn't the case.

I don't know where we go from here. I wish I had the answers to this problems. But I don't. :|

I think you summed everything up pretty well. Personally I am in my last semester of college and will be graduating in May and just want to get it over and done with. After that I have no clue where I will be as the way it looks now there is not many opportunities for this area in my line of work. Couple that with be being stubborn about moving to the cities and doing something I would like to do leaves me unemployed. Like Tech, my free time has been taken up by doing other things such as scripting plugins for SourceMod and recently my gaming squad has asked me to redo the website again. Funny thing about that is I opted to use phpBB3 . As we all know that is easy to do but we need a roster and there is none of phpBB so I am working on that which will take awhile as being away from this stuff has taken its toll on my memory.
I fully understand your comments on the people that have offered to work on this project and agree with it. I started off knowing hardly any PHP and with the help of the core team you are referring to I am comfortable modifying existing code and fairly comfortable creating new code although it takes me awhile to do so. I also do agree that we need more people, as always is the case. I think the decision that was made to move in a slightly different direction will greatly benefit the project, but like you said it is practically starting from scratch all over again.
In the end, I said I wasn't leaving before and still have no intentions to, but like all of us I cannot grantee I will have much time to put forth. Come May I will either have a lot of time being out of school and unemployed or have no time working 24/7 :? .

I know what you mean by busy Tech.

Have full time college, working part-time at my uncle's store, trying to start my own business at the same time has been whats been keeping me away. I think phpbb-evo is great and I learned a tremendous amount of "stuff" about php, coding style/setup, project structure, teamwork on projects, and a lot about my fellow devs that I have the pleasure of working with.

My best goes out to you Tech and your wife, congrats, I know from discussions that you two have been trying, and I hope the best for your family.

As Tech mentioned we have been let down by a number of people (which i feel were along for the ride possible),i myself have had a small down turn with my health late last year (not life threatening :D ) but thing's are getting back to normal, well normal for me anyway.

As for the project, well you know i want to see it go on in some way,i say this because if you have a cms that has a core that can be upgraded with minimal changes from us before we could output an update and it keeps up with the latest core (phpbb 3 or 4 etc) then it's got to be good for the communities out there.

Working closely with the core team has also improved my knowledge way past just themeing (NE) and this leads to a great feeling of achivement for me personaly and it shows the core team for the sort of people they are,People i regard as very good friend's :D that are willing to help other's

i dont think u should sell or close or do anything to any of the projects!
you know some of us followed you from platnium rember techno!
that was years ago.. we have faith in you and your projects!
i disagree with all the folowing statements on nuke evolution and this site..
i dont hink evo german should take over..BULLSHIT no i disagree its my opinion!
if anything i think jeff and rott should come back and actually work like grownups on the project with you..
jeff was a pain inthe ass..but he actually did work on the project!

I have no interest in Nuke. I will help out anyone that needs it, or any project that needs it. But I feel I have done everything I could and wanted to do there. It's time to move on.

PE isn't one I want to, but we cannot do it in a timely fashion with the small workforce we have. It will take years at this rate.

I think you are over exaggerating his words. From what I know of Tech, he isn't the type of person to quit easily and I don't seem him doing that here. I think the amazing work he has done in the last few days is a testament to that.

I think personally this project is an good project compared too other phpbb portal scripts wish i could help but i went down an different road writing an cms from scratch instead so all i can do is just give tech hosting for his projects here.
as personally i think an cms should not reley on any 3rd party script so when phpbb 4 comes out you can just integrate it / bridge it etc or support other forum solutions and not be forced to phpbb but that's just my opinion

Its been forever since i posted here. What stopped me from helping is my lack of php knowledge. I do know other langauges (VB, C#, Python) but i never really learnt php, i could prolly code but as for how secure my code would be im not sure.

Is there a list of stuff that needs to be coded? If so ill take a look and see if I can help there but I doubt it. :(

If the project doesnt get completed i am sorry as what has been accomplished is brilliant and id very much love to see it flourish.

Side Note: Anyone recommend a text or such for learning php?
